Five Year Post-Football Concussion/Low Back Pain Resolved in One Treatment

Case Report

A 22 year-old graduate student was referred to my practice because of post-concussion symptoms that resulted from a collegate football injury. The patient stated that he was hit during a college game, flipped into the air and landed on his head. He stated that he has been plagued with neck, lower back pain and pain anytime he bent forward or would squat. All conventional medical examinations, chiropractic and physical therapy treatments failed to resolve the five year old symptoms. In addition, surgical intervenion was strongly recommended as a treatment.

The patient was cranially examined and his 3-dimensional distortions were recorded. The primary cranial distortion was a reversed motion of his sphenobasilar motion (were the occipital bone joins with the sphenoid to make up the base of the brain). Immediately following the cranial manipulation, the patient stated that his 5 year low back and cervical pain totally disappeared. Patient then proceeded to do 50 bends, twists, and squats in an attempt to ilicit a pain response but nothing happened. This miraculous result is not a fluke. There are a number of video testimonials on this site that support the efficacy of this treatment. The more people that become aware of this information the less needless suffering will occur.

More than 173,200 concussions occur each year in U.S. children and teenagers as a result from traumatic injuries incurred while engaged in activities such as football and soccer, basketball, trail biking and playgrounds.

Symptoms of a grade 1 concussion include being dazed and an inability to follow directions or think clearly, states Brain Injury Association of America. With a grade 2 concussion, the individual experiences similar symptoms that last longer and may also suffer amnesia. With a grade 3 concussion, the person losses consciousness and experiences more serious symptoms such as a noticeable change in brain function, behavior and cognition.

In addition to the cognitive symptoms, concussions may also cause a person to feel nauseous, dizzy or tired, persistent headaches, vomiting, recurring neck and low back pain and loss of memory. People with concussions may experience blurred vision, difficulty balancing and sensitivity to light. Changes in sleeping patterns or mood may also occur.

Most people fully recover from a mild concussion with rest, according to WebMD. Even if symptoms disappear quickly after a mild concussion, the brain is still healing and is more prone to injury. Repeated concussions may cause permanent damage and inhibit a person’s ability to learn, speak or move.

Treatment for most concussions includes rest, the application of ice wrapped in a washcloth and an over-the-counter acetaminophen, according to WebMD. Persons experiencing a single, mild concussion generally have a very good recovery prognosis with few long-term effects.

Although the recommended information regarding treatment of concussion may prove beneficial, there is one major aspect that is totally being overlooked because of lack of knowledge. That missing link is a distortion of cranial bone motion. The human skull exhibits a pumping motion to assist the flow of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain. Impact to the skull can reverse this basic motion, which places an increase in tension within the dural membrane system. The dural tube extends from within the cranial vault down through the foramen magnum (opening in the base of the skull), attaches tenaciously to the upper three cervical vertebrae and then attaches to the second sacral tubercle in the pelvic region. Tension within this tube has the potential of irritating the nerve roots down the entire spine, which in turn is responsible for causing chronic neck and lower back pain, dizziness and many of the above symptoms. The travesty of this scenario is the fact that a specialty of craniopathy or cranial osteopathy has existed since the 1930’s and can alleviate in a relatively short period of time many of the symptom related to concussion. The following case study exemplifies this fact.
