What is Cranial Manipulation and Why is it so Important?

by Gerald H. Smith, DDS, DNM

The human skull is made up of 28 bones. These bony plates are connected by sutures. The sutures are expansion contraction joints that permit micro motion between the plates. Traumas like whiplash, falls, blows to the head, plus iatrogenic causes from dental procedures like straightening teeth, having a tooth filled, having a crown or implant placed, and extractions all have one thing in common: they all have the potential of causing distortions to the alignment of the cranial bones. Misalignment of the 28 bones of the skull will directly affect the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) around the brain and neurologic distortions to the central nervous and autonomic nervous systems (sympathetic [gas pedal] and parasympathetic [breaks] divisions).

Cranial manipulation was discovered in the 1920s by Nephi Cottam, DC and refined through the years by such pioneers as Andrew Taylor Still, DO, William G. Sutherland, DO, Harold Magoun, DO, John Upledger, DO, Major B. DeJarnette, DC, Marc Pick, DC, Viola Fryman, DO, George Goodhardt, DC, and Cleo A. Bludworth, DC to name a few.

Using gentle pressures a skilled practitioner can diagnose and then realign or reset the bones.

Dysfunction of the body has many underlying causes, however, cranial distortions represents one area which is often overlooked by most physicians. Removing the distortions will have a major impact on restoring the feeling of wellbeing. Cranial correction removes a major stressor from the brain, spine, and pelvis. Following a cranial manipulation session, patients often remark that they feel more relaxed, their occlusion (bite) feels more comfortable when their teeth touch, their eye sight is clearer, their mental fog lifts, and many of their pains (neck, shoulders, arms, hands, lower back) disappear. Re-establishing CSF flow reactivates brain, muscle, cognitive function and much more allowing the whole system to feel more normal.

The following testimonial was unsolicited from a recent patient.

Just wanted to drop a quick note to say that It was a pleasure to meet with you (and Rebecca). I am not sure what it is but I felt more refreshed when I woke up this morning. Believe this is a start and I began taking the supplements this morning. Can’t imagine what state I will be after a few months! Look forward to staying on your recommended path towards recovery and thank you for your service. Have a good weekend! — Best,—John—K.
